| Cliff Hilty | Reply: posted - 15 March 2010 9:51 Sunday was quite good up north. starting around 12:00 pm we saw 4-8kt thermals with bases at 11k and clouds lining up to the grand canyon. didn't go far though as I was flying the club blanik and 1-34 but a hour in each got some good thermalling practice in. |
| Andy Durbin | Reply: posted - 14 March 2010 18:46 Well day after cold front passage was actually worse that the day before except for a very small window between 3:30 and 4:00 pm when thermals of 4-5 kts were claimed. GY and NC were joined by GW for another day of scratching practice but didn't stray far. Flying with the SATR file loaded makes it clear how very, very, close the airspace is to Turf. Andy |
| Bob Thompson | Reply: posted - 13 March 2010 17:47 And, when you come out to PV airport, use the road to Turf and cross the runway. Part of the road into the north side is still a lagoon, full of sticky mud. And, wear shoes you are NOT going to wear back into your house. The little ground plants that have lots of purple pollen are all over the place, and your soles will be very purple afer a short time... not something that you would want to walk on carpet with. Ditto for laying on the ground to tape underside of your wings or putting a knee on the ground. Today was good weak conditions practice, and NC made a good LOW save at one time. All the lift was over the flats. The hills were useless. Cus up north looked nice, but the tow to get there would have been very beneficial to Roy's retirement fund. |
| Andy Durbin | Reply: posted - 13 March 2010 16:38 Well NC suckered me into going out and it was actually soarable, but not good enough for XC. Best I saw was about 5,300ft and it took a while to get there. Never got more than about 10 miles from Turf. There were cu on the Bradshaws today but no chance of getting to them. Andy

| Michael Stringfellow | Reply: posted - 13 March 2010 15:34 My take on Saturday is the same as yours - soaring unlikely. Sunday is looking substantially better, with top of the lift showing around 7,000 feet or so and the chance of cumulus over the Bradshaws. Mike the Strike Discus 2B WA |
| Andy Durbin | Reply: posted - 13 March 2010 6:58 I saw no sign of thermal activity Friday and, judging by OLC, conditions at El Tiro were very poor. I see nothing in the weather data that suggests Saturday will be any better, and with building high pressure I would expect it to be worse. It looks like the front that will go through tonight will bring some moisture so Sunday may be ok if the winds are not too strong. It's unlikely I'll be at Turf today. WA what's your read on Saturday WX?

| Bob Thompson | Reply: posted - 13 March 2010 6:24 Soaring forecasts are poor, but as ADDS indicates the front moving through / skimming to the north later today, I'll head out to Turf with 19 anyway, and socialize with out of state friends and anyone else that shows up until things look up. |
| Tony Smolder | Reply: posted - 10 March 2010 21:10 How far did you expect from El-Tiro today Andy? Two - 400K+ flights Didn't see any flights posted from Turf? El-Tiro: Racing all 3 days this weekend with Chili dinner Friday and racing discussion Saturday morning with GH's awesome dinner Saturday night. Plus scoring (new 2010 Winscore released) and replay of the days flights both days. Movie Saturday night in our spacious banquet room. Several of us are camping at the field Fri and Sat. And if it's not so good there's plenty of work to prep for Reg9S. TS1

| Bob Thompson | Reply: posted - 10 March 2010 18:51 Area around Turf was good for a while, then OD moved in from the north. Got 2 1/2 hours, much of it under overcast. Flew with PW from Nevada. We both hope to get in more / better airtime this weekend. Bob T. |
| Michael Stringfellow | Reply: posted - 10 March 2010 15:22 Nothing bad down south - fluffy cumulus with bases near 10k - a lot of wet ground, though. Mike the Strike Discus 2B WA |
| Andy Durbin | Reply: posted - 10 March 2010 15:05 What's not - practice or Turf? I thought excessive pleasure was the problem, didn't you fix that? Sky looked great over Phoenix and to the South today but huge overdevelopment on the Bradshaws. I saw that Randy (AV8) took spot for a run but he didn't go as far as I expected. Maybe there was OD down there too. Andy |
| Tuno | Reply: posted - 10 March 2010 14:59 I can't -- it's not in my program letter!!! |
| Nigel Cripps | Reply: posted - 10 March 2010 14:40 Yes, hopefully 2 days. I need the practice. |
| Andy Durbin | Start of thread: posted - 10 March 2010 12:12 Anyone thinking of flying at Turf this weekend? Andy |
